The Concordia Neighborhood is bounded by NE Columbia Boulevard on the north, NE Prescott on the south, NE 42nd Avenue on the east and NE 22nd Avenue on the west. If you like art, diversity, delicious food, funky shops, and older homes, you'll love Concordia.
Many in Portland would probably refer to this area as the "Alberta Arts" neighborhood as the growing art scene has seemingly put this area on the map for many Portlanders. Along with the funky art scene, in the early 00's Portland's City Council adopted a plan to make Alberta a more walking- and biking-friendly area. The work was completed in 2003, but even before that the neighborhood had been rediscovered.
Concordia is full of the popular bungalows, four squares, and Craftsman style homes. Along with the rest of Portland prices shot up here over the last 5 years bringing the prices closer to other well developed eastside neighborhoods. Now the area abounds with refurbished homes with character, charm, and detail.
The combination of the art scene and the improved streets has made Alberta Street from MLK to 33rd one of the hottest places in town to have a business. Combined with McMenamin's Kennedy School (a grade school converted to hotel, restaurant, bar and movie theatre) and a New Seasons Grocery, both on NE 33rd, many people find everything they want and need within walking distance in Concordia.
Alberta Street was voted one of the best streets in town for restaurants by Willamette Weekly. For Italian food recently rated some of the city's best try Ciao Vito. Bernie's Southern Bistro provides delicious southern food on a great backyard patio, and Cannon's Rib Express in the New Seasons parking lot is a long time favorite of the locals. For a bar atmosphere with great Mediterranean food try Zaytoon's, but if you just want a big delicious plate of burgers and fries and 2 page list of microbrews head to Concordia Ale House. Don't look for McDonald's or Taco Bell, though. There is a complete absence of national chains on Alberta which seems to make the neighborhood quite happy.
